ACHIEVEMENTS

During my career that spans for 33 years at Kenyatta university, I have made major strides in the fields of teaching, research and community outreach. I have participated in numerous academic forums which link KU with Universities among them Leicester (UK), Lancaster (UK), Coventry(UK), Liège (Belgium), KU-Leuven(Belgium), George Washington Institute (GWI)-(USA), Claremont Graduate School (USA), University of California -Los Angeles(USA), Johns Hopkins(USA), Alagappa (India), Bharathiar (India), Bundeswehr- München (Germany) Kwa Zulu Natal (SA); University of Ibadan- Nigeria; University of Ghana; and Cavendish University-Uganda. These have opened avenues for academic exchange, research and publications.

Here below are just a few key contributions to the University advancement:

  • 2020: Jointly with Women Educationists Researchers of Kenya (WERK) undertook a research on Safe Work Spaces for Women Staff at Kenyatta University Main Campus where we are merged the project with a Technological APP I had initiated (Mobile App), a Prototype that addresses and communicates SGBV. In the project, we mapped the Safe Work Spaces for Kenyatta University community.

  • 2019: I initiated an MoU with Lancaster University – To facilitate academic engagement between the two institutions.

  • 2019: I launched the “Thursdays in Black Movement” – an initiative to sensitize the KU community on SGBV. This is a global advocacy movement that sensitizes the global community on the Culture of Silence surrounding SGBV in particular Gender inequality that leads to it. In this day, all wear black to communicate in silence.

  • 2018: I facilitated the launching of the Somesha Msichana Initiative in liaison with KUSA/KUGAM where we jointly invited Her Excellency, Mrs. Rachel Ruto on the UNInternational Day for the Girl Child on 11th October, 2018. This initiative supports underprivileged girls to finance their education.

  • 2018: I represent Kenyatta University at a Consultative meeting on Gender Responsive Pedagogy Integration in Kenya Education system on 6th September at the Kenya Management Institute, where key curriculum issues on gender were discussed.

  • 2018: I represented the University in the International Day of Women and Girls in Science Celebrations at the UN Complex in Gigiri on 12th February.

  • 2019: As we observed it on 10th where we invited Prof. Esther Mombo- former DVC St. Paul’s University to speak. Observing the International Women’s Day held annually on 8th March.

  • 2019: Led KU to recognize the International Day of the Girl Child on October 11th where I invited Madame Judy Thongori, a prominent Kenyan Family Lawyer. She engaged the KU community, Students and staff on Family Law and Inheritance

  • 2019: Initiated a program with Johns Hopkins University, which selected undergraduate students for training in qualitative methods in gender research. These were sourced from the schools of Humanities and Social sciences, Education, Economics and Business.
