Bachelor of Public Policy and Administration (BPPA)
In addition to the masters’ programmes, Kenyatta University also launched a Bachelor of Public policy and Administration degree programme, tailored to develop analytical skills among students in order to enhance quality of service especially at the middle level of administration in both the public and private sector. The programme targets persons who wish to pursue their career either in the public service or the private sector, by equipping them with practical skills for solving public policy and administration challenges. Even more importantly, it is designed to bring about attitudinal change in the public service by cultivating a culture of accountability and transparency. The Bachelor of Public Policy and Administration (BPPA) takes duration of four (4) years. The programme provides an opportunity for many public servants to grow in the career as it accommodates those with relevant diploma certificates who wish to upgrade to higher levels of training.
The Executive Master of Public Policy and Public Administration Programme (EMPPA)
The Executive Master of Public Policy and Administration degree programme at Kenyatta University was designed for executives and senior managers in government, private sector and Non –Governmental Organizations. The main focus of the Programme is to equip senior executives with the knowledge, relationships and tools necessary to drive results at the highest levels of management of public and private sector. The establishment of this programme was motivated by the high demand for diverse public policy analysis and administration skills by executives and senior managers in both the private and public sector but who are unable to take study leave. Thus, candidates enroll and pursue the programme while working in their respective positions. The programme is open to executives from diverse backgrounds ranging from humanities, legal, natural sciences, education as well as those with a business management orientation.
The programme provides skills for public policy problem-solving through identifying societal problems, subjecting them to critical analysis, and weighing possible solutions through discussions, lectures and guest speaker presentations. EMPPA takes duration of one calendar year (12 months) and comprises three (3) trimesters. Its main attraction is that it offers both a flexible mode of delivery and flexible time for learning as it is only offered in the evenings and weekends. Consequently, it does not interrupt work schedules of senior executives and managers. Another advantage of the programme is that it offers an ideal setting for networking, exchange of ideas and experiences among fellow students and staff.
Target groups for this programme include: all those serving in leadership positions such as Management consultants, Executive and senior managers in any of the following areas: Private sector, Government departments, Parastatals, Foreign missions, Faith based institutions, Local and international NGO’s and Educational institutions. Class size is deliberately made small so as to accommodate between 10 and 20 students. This is important in providing a good environment for more personalized interaction between the professors and their students.
Master of Public Policy and Administration (MPPA) Programme
Like EMPPA, the Master of Public Policy and Administration (MPPA) is an interdisciplinary graduate programme designed to provide students with skills needed for effective public administration and policy analysis, both locally and internationally. The establishment of this programme was motivated by the high demand for diverse public policy analysis and administration skills by executives and senior managers in both the private and public sector but who are unable to take study leave. Thus, candidates enroll and pursue the programme while working in their respective positions. The MPPA degree programme consists of coursework, examination and research project. The programme is offered in the evenings/weekend and students are required to take a total of twenty (20) units by the end of the programme. This includes 16 taught units and a research project which is equivalent to 4 units.
