The Fashion Design and Marketing programmes of study are designed to train students at undergraduate, Masters and PhD levels. The FDM programme offers high quality and dynamic training focusing on fashion design, apparel production, fashion marketing, quality control and technical skills to enhance local and international trade in textile and fashion products. The programmes are designed to assist individuals to become self-reliant by training them for self-employment and leveraging diverse opportunities in the textile and fashion industries. The curriculum also encourages entrepreneurship so that its graduates can contribute to the development of the economy through creation of employment and innovative solutions that can be monetized. The FDM department emphasizes fashion for the good of society and the environment. It is envisaged that the graduates will be marketable not only in the public sector, but also in the private and development sectors like Non Governmental Organizations (NGO’s), Corporate and Creative Industries.
The objectives of the FDM programmes are to:

  • Provide students with knowledge and skills in the area of Fashion Design and Marketing.
  • Offer training that serves as a foundation for higher learning in the discipline.
  • Train professionals who can effectively meet the job market demands in the fashion design and other related industries.
  • Embrace and use digital tools to enhance fashion marketing, styling and fashion design.
  • Empower students to create and innovate solutions that address emerging issues in Apparel, Fashion and Textiles.

The FDM Department aims at producing leaders and change makers in the Fashion and Textiles industry across the region.

COURSE CODE AND OVERVIEW

The Fashion Design and Marketing Department was established to provide high quality training n programmes related to Fashion Design and Marketing. This programme aims to produce competent, creative, innovative research-oriented designers who are sensitive and responsive to societal needs and the right of every person to knowledge. The Department, has a qualified and committed team of lecturers comprising 2 Senior Lecturers and 6 Lecturers.. We offer Fashion Design and Marketing (FDM) at BSc, MSc and PhD levels. At postgraduate level students explore different areas of such as: Textile Science; International Marketing and Distribution; Home Economics Education; Digital Marketing; Fashion Design; Entrepreneurship and Creative Textile Crafts. The department’s proactive approach of involving industry stakeholders in curriculum review puts us at the forefront in meeting market demand.

RATIONALE

Recent developments in the fashion and textile industry have created opportunities and challenges that need to be addressed through highly trained human resources. These include changing technology, increased investment opportunities, market dynamics, highly informed consumers and stiff competition for high quality fashion and textile products brought about by globalization of the world economy. The Fashion Design and Marketing department aims at preparing students to participate fully in industrial development and become key players in the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Vision 2030.The FDM Department’s Vision Statement aims at “Advancing Fashion Design and Marketing scholarly excellence through training, research and innovation”. The mission of the Department of Fashion Design and Marketing is to “Promote high quality training, research and innovation that equips learners with knowledge, skills and creative thinking for diverse career opportunities in the fashion and textile industry.”

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the programme, the graduate will be able to:

  • PLO1: Demonstrate and use skills and competencies in the areas of design, pattern making and garment construction.
  • PLO2: Apply innovative and creative skills in the development of fashion and textile products.
  • PLO3: Apply technology in designing, pattern making and production of fashion related products.
  • PLO4: Demonstrate leadership and entrepreneurial skills in the management of fashion and textile industry
  • PLO5: Develop skills and competencies that depict professionalism and ethical practice in the fashion industry.
  • PLO6: Synthesize and apply research skills and competencies in the topical issues in the fashion industry.

MODE OF DELIVERY

The mode of delivery will be based on face to face (full time)/ blended modes.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

  • For admission into the Bachelor of Science (Fashion design and Marketing) program a student must have sat and passed his/her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with mean of Grade C+ (plus). Additionally, have passed and attained a minimum of Grade C+ (plus) in at least ONE of the following subjects in Art and Design or Home Science or any one Science subject.
  • Those with a mean grade of C (plain) at KCSE or equivalent and a Diploma of at least credit pass in Fashion Design or Clothing Technology/Art and Design/Interior Design/Textile Technology from recognized institutions will be considered.
  • Mean grade of C- (Minus) at KCSE or equivalent with a Diploma of at least credit Pass in Fashion Design or Clothing from a recognized institution.
  • Those with a mean grade of C- (minus) at KCSE or equivalent and progressed from certificate to Diploma in Fashion Design with a credit pass from recognized institutions will be considered.
