The Department of Fine Art and Design takes pride in being the oldest and only Department offering degree courses in both fine art and design.  We offer courses at Diploma, Bachelor, Master and PhD levels.  The Department offers a unique environment, spanning the Fine Art and Design disciplines with emphasis on creative problem-solving and inventiveness.  Lecturers are Fine Art & Design practitioners and educators with national and international exhibition profiles. Members of staff in the Department undertake research in contemporary art and design which underpins and informs teaching.  The Department also engages in extensive national and international programmes with visiting artists and speakers and overseas study programmes.

DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES

Diploma in Fine Art

This course is practical based and prepares students for a career in the Fine Art and Design industry. It also serves as an entry requirement for those who would like to pursue a degree in Fine Art and Design.

 

Campus: Main   Mode: Full-time (Regular)   Duration: 2 years

Intake: May and September

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In addition to meeting the University and School entry requirements, all candidates for Diploma must be holders of at least KCSE mean grade C (Plain) with any of the following:

  • KCSE mean grade C (Plain) with a minimum of C-(minus) in Art and Design. OR,
  • KCSE mean grade C (Plain) and a Certificate in Art and Design from a recognized institution. OR,
  • KCSE mean grade C (Plain) and a portfolio of artworks to be presented before a Department selection panel for interview and assessment.

BACHELOR PROGRAMMES

 

Bachelor of Arts in in Fine Art             B.A (Fine Art)

The Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) degree is a practical based course that is structured to develop knowledge that leads to a variety of careers in the Fine Art and Design industry.

 

Campus: Main   Mode: Full-time (Regular)   Duration: 4 years

Intake: September

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The common University regulations and entry requirements for Undergraduate courses shall apply. In addition consideration will be given to those with:

  • KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus) or its equivalent with a minimum of C in Art and Design. OR
  • KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus) or its equivalent but without art. A portfolio of artworks to be presented before a Department selection panel for interview and assessment.  OR
  • KCSE mean grade of C (plain) or its equivalent and with a Diploma in Art and Design from a recognized institution.

 

Bachelor of Education in Fine Art     B.Ed (Fine Art)

The Bachelor of Education (Fine Art) is a course structured to develop knowledge and creative skills geared into a career in teaching of Fine Art and Design. The course also gives intellectual and creative skills that can lead to careers in the Fine Art and Design industry.

 

Campus: Main   Mode: Full-time (Regular) and Continuing Education, (CEP)   Duration: 4 years

Intake: September (Regular) and August (CEP)           

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The common University regulations and entry requirements for Undergraduate courses shall apply. In addition consideration will be given to those with:

  • KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus) or its equivalent with a minimum of C in Art and Design. OR
  • KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus) or its equivalent but without art. A portfolio of artworks to be presented before a Department selection panel for interview and assessment.  OR
  • KCSE mean grade of C (plain) or its equivalent and with a Diploma in Art and Design from a recognized institution. OR
  • KCSE mean grade of C (plain) or its equivalent with P1, S1, or Diploma in Education from a recognized Institution with proven experience in Art and Design. A portfolio of artworks to be presented before a Department selection panel for interview and assessment.

MASTER PROGRAMMES

 

Master of Arts in in Fine Art   M.A (Fine Art)

Master of Arts (Fine Art) is a course that extends for a period of at least eighteen months and is offered in two separated modes (a) Studio option and (b) Theory option. Studio option is done through coursework, examination and a creative project, while the theory option is done through coursework, examination and a thesis.

Campus: Main   Mode: Full-time (Regular)   Duration: Minimum 2 years

Intake: September

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The common University regulations and entry requirements for all Master Degree courses shall apply. The common regulations for all Masters Degrees in the School of Creative and Performing Arts, Film and Media Studies shall apply.

 

The following shall be eligible for registration for the M.A. (Art and

Design):

  • A holder of Bachelor of Education or Bachelor of Arts with specialization in Fine Art or Art and Design with at least Second Class (Upper Division) honours from Kenyatta University or its equivalent.
  • Those with Second Class (Lower Division) degree with at least two years relevant work experience will be considered.

DOCTORAL PROGRAMMES

 

Doctor of Philosophy in Fine Art   Ph.D (Fine Art)

Doctor of Philosophy in Fine Art is offered through research in any field of Fine Art and Design, culminating in a thesis.

 

Campus: Main   Mode: Full-time (Regular)   Duration: Minimum 3 years

Intake: September

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The common University regulations and entry requirements for all Doctoral Degree courses shall apply. The common regulations for all Doctoral Degrees in the School of Creative and Performing Arts, Film and Media Studies shall apply.

 

The following shall be eligible for registration for the Ph.D (Fine Art):

  • A holder of Master of Arts with specialization in Fine Art or Art and Design from Kenyatta University or its equivalent.
