Although the vast majority of African languages are tonal, there are very few detailed descriptions of the tone systems in these languages. The goal of this workshop is to support further research on African tone systems by faculty and postgraduate students in several institutions. Among the topics to be covered are the following:
- The background on what is known about the tone system in African languages.
- The methods for studying tone systems.
- The expectations that professional tonologists have in terms of publications and theses/ dissertation writing.
